TONGARIRO RIVER DELTA
It's every anglers dream to have the opportunity to delicately present a fly to a trophy fish and engage a battle with one of New Zealand's premier sport fish - the Brown Trout.
Lake Taupo is home of some of New Zealand's largest and wildest Brown Trout - so in conjunction with Taupo’ s best fly fishing guide "Andrew Christmas" we are now able to offer a Lower Tongariro Raft/Fly fishing package which targets these monsters.
Brown trout are spawning in the summer months and the lower Tongariro becomes home to hundreds of large fish sometimes pushing well over the ten pound trophy mark.
Many of the fish you will encounter on the float will have never seen an angler before as they live deep in the lake during the year and will only enter the shallows of the Tongariro when they are ready to spawn.
The Lower Tongariro is very hard to access and very hard to fish due to overgrown banks with large willow trees and deep undercut banks which is the perfect habitat for growing large lazy trout.
The use of a raft has proved to be a valuable tool while spotting and sneaking up on feeding trout not to mention the added ability to access water which anglers don't usually see. The best months to take this trip are January through till the end of March as this is when the big numbers of fish will be moving in - giving us countless opportunity's in any given day.
As it will be summer and temperatures high - anglers can look forward to fishing a dry fly rig which adds to the excitement of spotting your fish and then seeing him take you’re well presented fly from the surface.
Brown trout will be our target trophy fish but expect to see and hook good numbers of Rainbow trout as well which have called the lower river home before entering back into the lake.
This trip is perfect for anglers who want to see plenty of large trout and enjoy a soft gentle float through the crystal water of the lower Tongariro River without the fear of having to challenge any whitewater rapids.
At the completion of the day we will reach the Tongariro River Delta and enter Lake Taupo. From here we will be picked up by motorboat and taken back to Tokaanu wharf to enjoy a well deserved cold beer.
